The game takes place on a roulette wheel that has either 37 or 38 pockets, depending on which version of roulette you’re playing. It’s also important to note that you have to place your bets beforehand, and you need to predict the number or colour you think that the ball will land on.
The dealer will then spin the roulette wheel in one direction, while the ball is spun in the opposite direction. The ball will then fall into one of the numbered/coloured pockets and if you’ve guessed where it lands correctly, you win!
There are a number of different roulette bets you can place.
First of all, there are three different types of inside bets. There are straight or single bets where you place your bet on a single number. A split bet is where you bet on two adjoining numbers that are located either vertically or horizontally. Then there’s a street bet, where you bet on 3 numbers that are on a horizontal line.
Outside bets are where you bet on either red or black and if you guess correctly you win.
You can also do an even or odd bet, and a dozen bet where you place a bet on either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd group of 12.
There are three main types of roulette that you can play here at Royal Vegas Ontario. But what are the differences?
American roulette first came to the continent in the latter half of the 18th century. Once it got here, it went through a few changes before settling into the form players at the Royal Vegas Ontario are most familiar with. American roulette has the same roulette table as the other types, but the main differentiators are that it has a 0 and 00 pocket. Plus, the numbers between 1 and 36 that sit between the two zero pockets are slightly different to the other types of roulette, too. In American roulette, your odds (if you bet on a single space) are 37/1.
European roulette is very similar to American Roulette, however, it has 37 pockets and only one 0 space, making your odds a much better 35/1. In addition, the numbers on a European roulette board are laid out differently from an American one.
The French roulette board is the oldest of the roulette boards. It has an identical layout to its European counterpart, however, what sets French roulette apart are the bets you can make and the different rules. In European and American roulette, if the ball lands on a space other than the one you’ve bet on, you lose.
However, in French roulette, there are the La Partage rule and the En Prison rule. Under the rule, which means ‘sharing’ or ‘dividing’, if the ball lands on zero, all even-money bets (Red/Black, High/Low, and Odd/Even) are automatically split in half, with half going back to the player and half being retained by the house.
Under the En Prison rule, the dealer places a marker on all even money bets whenever the ball lands on zero – in other words, “imprisoning” them. If the player’s even-money bet wins on the next round, they retain what they had originally bet, no additional winnings. While it isn’t as good as an outright win, it’s still better than the loss they would have sustained playing at a European or American roulette table. Another distinguishing feature of French roulette is that the table is in French and so are the bets, so it’s probably a good idea to brush up on your français.
